[ knitting his brows together, honestly just disgusted further by the idea ]
—You, so loathsome and lowly in your thought. Vengeance is base, begetting only more harm. I shall do no such thing. I will not stoop to such a Godless act.
It would almost be exhausting to list. The feet I've had to kiss -- the egos I have had to soothe to gain the slightest bit of favor. To have them on my side.
While the likes of you, I assume, would prefer to be freely given what you feel you deserve.
The only thing we ever wanted was to be allowed to live. To be treated as humans—paying tax was fine, until they taxed us to the point that we could not survive. Being ostracized was fine, until they started to torture us for entertainment, as punishment for our differing faiths.
To do the hard labor of working for our food, of building our own shelters—that would all have been fine, were we allowed to do so in peace.
Is that too much to ask for? Do we not deserve to be treated as human? To be allowed to live, without having our own hard earnings taken away from us to such a degree that we would starve—only for that demand to grow, while we suffered?
The countless hours of work they did—the countless times we were scorned, made animals to jeer at, the countless number of people who simply tried to live, only to lose their lives because—what?
Just what differentiates us? The feet we've had to kiss, the times we've had to bow—not for any favor, but simply to be allowed to exist—
Just what makes you different? Just how did we ask for too much?
